The History of the Ear Candle,
Ancient Cone Process
Ear cones were used in many cultures and times throughout history by such
diverse groups as the Aztecs, the Egyptians, and in India, China, and Tibet.
Some ascribe the use of Ear Cones to the former Atlantean empire. It is generally believed
ear cones were used not only for the physiological cleansing of the ear canal
but also for spiritual purification before initiation rites and rituals. The
processes of use have been lost or kept secret over time and are primarily
handed down in an oral tradition here in the West.

Physical aspects
Traditionally, glazed clay or stone ear cones containing
carved spirals on the inner surface which helped create an inner clockwise
spiral flow, were used to carry herbs or incense into the ear. The vacuum action
of the cone today creates a counter clockwise spiral energy to draw out
accumulated physical debris such as ear wax buildup, crystallized protein
matter, fluid buildup due to infection, even various types of parasites. It is
not difficult to imagine the variety of things that can enter the ear canal due
to accident or ignorance. Years ago, a colleague had a cockroach
imbedded in the wax of his ear, discovered during a hearing test, and there are
numerous stories of pebbles, glass, even wormlike parasites in people's ears.

Esoteric aspects
On the etheric levels, the spiraling smoke from the
coning process creates a subtle but powerful inward energy spiraling through the
body, breaking up blockages in our subtle energy system effecting not only the
physical body, but our mind and emotions, helping to cleanse us of repressed
emotions and memories. This allows us to release subconscious patterns that may
cause degenerative disease. Those of us practicing various forms of
bio-energetic healing and therapies become aware sooner or later that illness
and disease shows up energetically as mental and emotional blocks long before
manifesting in the physical, and that the healing process involves becoming aware
of these memories and emotions and dealing with them, dissolving an underlying
energetic cause of illness or disease.

Ear Candles and their Use Today |
Modern Ear Candle construction
The most common methods of candling today in the West
utilize a simple cloth and wax cone that is discarded after use. Usual
construction consists of strips of cotton dipped in wax, wound in a spiral, then
dried and hardened. Some ear candle types are made with wax containing a variety
of medicinal herbs.
Ear Candle Usage
The users we have spoken with have
usually suggested gently inserting the narrow end of
the cone into the ear canal. The client's head is
comfortably supported underneath and behind by pillows or other soft materials,
with the ear facing upward. For safety, a wet towel or cloth and/or a paper
plate wrapped in tin foil is placed over the ear and head, a hole necessarily in
the plate for the candle to pass through. A bowl of water is kept nearby for
extinguishing the candle. The top of the candle is ignited and
slowly burns creating a gentle spiral effect, pulling debris from the ear canal
and stimulating energy flow internally. Before the candle burns down closer than
two inches from the ear, it is extinguished and removed. Naturally if material
exiting the ear during this process clogs the candle, then the candle must be
extinguished, removed from the ear, and tapped out into a bowl of water kept
nearby for this purpose. The ear candle is then replaced in the ear and relit
until finished. The ears may be cleansed of any remaining ash or debris with
simple soap and water or witch hazel. If going out into the cold or wind it is
suggested to place cotton balls in the ears for a few hours until the normal
coating of ear wax is naturally reestablished.
Some people may experience so large an amount of
material exiting the ear canal that another candle or two may be necessary to
finish the process. Ear wax naturally replenishes itself in about 24 hours.
People in high decibel occupations such as musicians or heavy equipment
operators usually have much more material in the ear canal than swimmers and
divers. It is suggested to do the candling/coning in groups of three sessions,
at least three days to a week apart from each other. Then, take a break of up to
half a year. The ear may be coned every six months.
A word of caution: human hair is
highly flammable. Burns, whether large or small, should be considered serious
injuries. Make sure you have the necessary things nearby to extinguish flames in
case of an accidental ignition of clothing, hair, or any other substances. Be
sure to prevent access to the area being used during the candling process of
children and animals large and small.
Results and advice
Most people report a sense of increased clarity,
improved vision and hearing, reduced tinnitus or TMJ ( tempero-mandibular joint
syndrome), sharper sense of smell and taste, sharper mental acuity and emotional
stability, a feeling of calm and peacefulness. It is strongly advised that this
process can be very profound, sometimes allowing the release of buried memories
or events and emotions. The person conducting the coning session should
therefore be versed in counseling skills, or have someone present who is, to
create and maintain an emotionally safe environment for the client and to guide
the client through any potential emotional turbulence.

Oils ear candles are custom made for
us in a meditative environment to accent their healing properties. Those
sensitive to energy inform us they are exceptionally clear. They are made from Cotton and beeswax only. Additionally,
to promote a higher standard of safety in reducing
the possibility of any back drip of hot wax into the ear canal during usage
there is no wax on the inner surface.
They measure approximately 11/8" (28mm) opening
at top, 1/4" (6mm) opening at bottom, 6
3/4" (173mm) length.
Please note there is always the possibility of heated
wax flowing against the skin of the ear and ear canal. Reread the suggested
usage description above.
